Lib Dems win even more money for pothole repairs

1.06.21pm GMT Mon 31st Oct 2005

Lib Dem councillors have got the Council to provide an extra £150,000 in the 2005/06 budget to get more pothole repairs in local roads.

Now, all potholes more than 25mm deep will be repaired, down from the previous 40mm threshold. It is estimated that the new limit will lead to the elimination of an extra 1,500 potholes each year on top of the 4,000 the Lib Dems have seen repaired annually.

Another success has been that the Council has just halved the time it takes to act on reported defects to 14 days. Until recently the response time for all but the most dangerous defects was 28 days.

A programme of essential planned maintenance to box junctions around Lambeth has also been agreed, including:-

Wandsworth Road and Wyvil Road

Wandsworth Road, by Sainsbury's

Wandsworth Road - North Street - Silverthorne Road

Acre Lane / Kings Avenue / Bedford Road

The works will consist of improvements to the road surface and re-painting the markings of yellow boxes. Works will be at night, in order to reduce disruption, although some of them will involve traffic diversions.

Potholes aren't just bad news for motorists; they are also a danger to cyclists. Under Labour, the annual pothole repair budget was slashed, leaving our roads in a dangerous state.
