Lambeth gets the recycling bug

6.53.35pm BST (GMT +0100) Thu 30th Jun 2005

Results of a MORI/Recycle Western Riverside campaign aimed at helping to increase recycling in Lambeth has shown that awareness and understanding of recycling provision amongst local residents in the borough is increasing.

There has been a particularly big increase in residents' knowledge about what materials can be recycled and how much recycling they actually do, compared to a poll in 2002.

  • 82% of Lambeth residents now think recycling household rubbish is "very worthwhile", up from 65% just before the campaign began in 2002.

  • 81% of residents now feel "well informed" about what materials can and cannot be recycled in their area - up from only 47% in 2002.

  • 78% of locals feel well-informed about what the benefits of recycling are - an increase of 27%.

  • Residents cite "improved services" as the main reason why they recycle more than before - this compares to 41% in 2002.

  • Accessibility of recycling facilities is a key factor. 85% of residents surveyed say they are 'fairly' or 'very' satisfied with the accessibility of recycling services provided by the council - nearly double that of 2002 - although there's still room for improvement.

There's a lot more that can be done to improve the recycling rate and Lib Dems will be pushing for more improvements in the weeks and months ahead.
