Lib Dems advance again in Vauxhall

1.23.09pm BST (GMT +0100) Mon 16th May 2005

With a 6.5% swing, the Liberal Democrats once again closed the gap with Labour in the Vauxhall constituency at the General Election.

Lib Dem candidate Charles Anglin said 'This is a great result after a hard-fought campaign. Thank you to everyone who came out to support me, whether it was the first time you voted Lib Dem, or whether you are a life-long supporter. I'm delighted the Lib Dems made such a good advance.'

As predicted, the Tories were firmly anchored in third place - the spot they have occupied in Vauxhall in General Elections since 1997, as well as in borough elections and recent Greater London Authority and Mayoral elections within Vauxhall.

The results:

Labour 19,744 (52.9%)

Liberal Democrat 9,767 (26.2%)

Conservative 5,405 (14.5%)

Green Party 1,705 (4.6%)

Others 732 (1.9%)
