Vauxhall Lib Dems adopt Charles Anglin as candidate7.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Wed 13th Apr 2005
Vauxhall Liberal Democrats yesterday formally adopted local councillor Charles Anglin as their candidate for the upcoming general election. Charles was born and raised in south London, the son of Jamaican parents who came to Britain in the 50's, his mother a care worker and his father a small businessman. He joined the Liberal Democrats at university, graduating from London University in History and Politics. He served as Vice Chair of the Student Lib Dems and was the party's candidate for President of the National Union of Students. After university Charles worked for the party, eventually setting up his own business offering advice on community relations for major regeneration projects. He now works for a major homelessness charity. He served on the party's top committees; the Federal Policy Committee and the Federal Executive, playing an active role in drafting the 1997 election manifesto and sitting on the post election policy review into economic policy. The 1997 General Election also saw Charles contest Leyton and Wanstead for the Liberal Democrats, as the youngest ever ethnic minority parliamentary candidate for any major party. Charles has been a Governor of local secondary school Lilian Baylis for over ten years. He is now also a Governor of King's College Hospital. Charles was elected as a Lambeth Councillor in 2002 representing Kennington, beating Labour in a hard fought campaign in a ward which they targeted. From 2002-2004 he led Lambeth Council's fight against crime, leading the turn-around in the Council's performance on this vital issue.
