Oval's Lib Dem Councillors Protest At Post Office Closures

6.25.20pm BST (GMT +0100) Tue 12th Oct 2004

Oval's three Liberal Democrat councillors sent off a letter of protest as soon as Post Office Counters Ltd announced their proposals to close two of our local post offices (on South Lambeth Road and Clapham Road).

We pointed out that the negative effects on the local community would be:

*inconvenience for elderly and vulnerable residents and families with young children having further to walk and major roads to cross

*no increase of counter availability at either of the alternative branches

*another empty shopfront

*impact on the turnover of the local businesses in fixed trading shopping parades.

The Council is working alongside community groups to try to save Lambeth's sub post offices. Thanks to all who have signed petitions!

Despite the protests, we hear that the closure of Clapham Rd PO is going ahead on 4th November, but the fate of South Lambeth Rd PO is still in the balance.
