LABOUR MAJORITY SLASHED!8.20.54pm BST (GMT +0100) Fri 11th Jun 2004
Lib Dem candidate, Cllr. Caroline Pidgeon, has said "Thank You" to voters after Labour's majority was slashed by over 10,000 votes in the election race for the Lambeth and Southwark London Assembly seat. The result, declared earlier this afternoon at the Brixton Recreation Centre, saw over a 5% swing from Labour to Liberal Democrat across Lambeth and Southwark. Caroline said: "This has been an excellent result for the Lib Dems. I would like to thank everyone who voted for me." She added: "Liberal Democrats were the winning team in the Lambeth and Southwark local elections in 2002, and we have slashed over 10,000 votes from Labour's majority today." "It also shows how disillusioned people are with the Labour Party - they are fed up with Labour's war in Iraq, the spin and the broken promises. They are turning to the Liberal Democrats". "With this result, Liberal Democrats are on course to take overall control of both Lambeth and Southwark Councils in the next local elections in 2006" The result today was: Labour 31.7% (DOWN 5.9%) - 36,280 Lib Dems 26.9% (UP 4.6%) - 30, 805 Conservatives 15.2% - 17, 379 Green 10.4% - 11, 900 Labour Majority 5, 475 In 2000, the result was: Labour 37.6% - 37, 985 Lib Dems 22.3% - 22,492 Conservatives 19% - 19,238 Greens 13.1% - 13,242 Labour Majority 15, 493
