London Lib Dem Campaigners Visit Crime Fighting Scheme4.41.04pm GMT Thu 26th Feb 2004
Lib Dem GLA spokesperson Caroline Pidgeon paid a visit to Lambeth on Saturday to see for herself the success of a Street Warden scheme set up by the Lib Dem led council. Caroline was accompanied by Lib Dem Mayoral Candidate, Simon Hughes and Lib Dem Lambeth councillors, Charles Anglin and Jeremy Clyne. "Since September, street wardens have made a valuable contribution to community safety", said Caroline. "They help tackle crime in the best way - through local initiatives. They are a very effective link between the council and local people" Lib Dem Parliamentary campaigner Charles Anglin added, "They encourage respect for other local people and have already contributed to lower crime and less anti-social behaviour along Streatham High Road and in Streatham Hill" Charles has championed the drive against crime by Lambeth Council over the last three years, which has seen street-crime fall by 36%, and the number of crack-houses cut by two-thirds. This is another successful local initiative. The Streatham Community Rangers Scheme has been running since September 2003. It is a Lib Dem initiative paid for through locally generated housing funds. They observe, report and deal with litter and fly-tipping. They are a valuable source of local information and offer advice on a range of community strategies. They liaise with local police officers to combat anti-social behaviour and graffiti.
